Catching up with the floating Islands

Herman Melville in the Moby Dick says, "…an island far away to the West and South. It is not down in any map; true places never are". This quote will seem true in every sense when you see the floating islands of Manipur.

Phumdis are floating mass of vegetation on the Loktak Lake creating drifting islands and islanders who live off the lake bounty in great harmony with nature.

Fishing is the mainstay for the 700 families that live a drifter's life on the mass of decomposing vegetation, which has about 4/5th submerged in the Loktak lake. However, there is lot of beauty around and enough to whet anyone's curiosity about life that is clearly not on Terra Firma.
